The Benefits and Challenges of Barndominium Living

Ready to Redefine Your Living Space?

Are you tired of the ordinary? Dreaming of a home that's both stylish and functional? A barndominium might be the perfect solution. In this blog post, we'll delve into the world of barndominiums, exploring their unique benefits and potential drawbacks. Whether you're a seasoned homeowner or a first-time buyer, you'll discover why barndominiums are gaining popularity as a modern and versatile housing option.

Here are some reasons why a Barndominium would be a good choice for your family.

  • Large wide open spaces to work with.  Because a steel building or wood post frame building roof is supported by the exterior walls only, this leaves the interior space for unlimited design possibilities.

  • These buildings are flexible for many different styles of architecture. From farmhouse, modern and anything in between, these structures are ready for your style.

  • No maintenance exteriors. Because the building's exterior is metal clad, no need to worry about painting. The prefinished metal panels have very long warranties up to 40 years in most cases.

  • Many homeowners will opt for a large building for RV, boat and other storage options, maybe only finishing out a portion of the structure for their living quarters.

  • Sometimes the types of homes can be cheaper depending on the square footage of living area ratio to the garage/shop. The customer can take advantage of the economy of scale by purchasing a large building.

  • These types of buildings typically go up quicker because of fewer trades involved to erect.

  • With the advancement of spray foam technology, these buildings are extremely energy efficient.

Some reasons a Barndominium may not be a good choice for your family.

  • Design limitations as far as the geometry of the structure. If the desire is to move outside of a rectangle on the exterior, the cost goes up significantly. This is where wood post frame buildings have an edge over steel. Wood structures are more conducive to roof hips and changes in direction.

  • Many HOA’s will not allow these types of structures. There are ways around this, if a brick or stone veneer is added to the walls leaving the roof as metal.

  • It may be difficult to find a contractor to build your home depending on your area.

  • If building in the city limits, be sure to contact your local permit office and discuss your plans.
